We stock and install Viking-compatible hinges and rollers across Tampa, and the typical installed price runs $140 to $380 depending on how many hinge sets or rollers your gate needs and which Viking model you have. Most jobs are done in under two hours once we’re on site, and if the failure is caught early, we can usually swap the parts the same day we diagnose them. The way most Tampa owners discover this problem is a gate that suddenly drags, scrapes, or sags at one corner, often accompanied by a grinding sound when the gate moves. The gate still opens, but it fights the operator every inch, and that strain shows up as a short part life downstream.
Carver Gate Repair Tampa is an independent gate service provider. We’re not affiliated with Viking, but we work on their equipment daily and keep the common hinge and roller configurations stocked on our trucks.
Which Viking Models This Applies To
Viking has kept its hinge and roller patterns fairly consistent across the residential swing and slide gate lines, but there are differences that matter when you’re ordering parts. The G-5 and F-1 series swing gates use a bolt-on heel hinge with a pressed-in sealed bearing roller, while the heavier R-6 slide gate line runs a taller, greasable roller assembly with a thicker mounting flange. The quickest way to identify what you have is to look at the hinge plate itself, Viking stamps a part number on the back edge of most OEM plates. If the stamp is worn off, measure the plate width and the roller diameter, we’ll match those numbers against the Viking spec we keep on file.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: Viking’s OEM hinges and rollers are well made, but they’re priced like OEM parts. For most residential installations, a quality aftermarket roller with a sealed bearing and a stainless steel pin performs as well in Tampa’s humidity, and it costs about 30 to 40 percent less. Where we won’t substitute aftermarket is on offset hinges or anything that carries a safety edge or sensor mount, those need the exact Viking geometry or the gate won’t close square against the stops. Lonnie Burke has been matching these parts for over two decades, and he’d rather tell you the OEM price than sell you an aftermarket part that fights the gate.

Signs Your Viking Hinge & Roller Replacement Is Failing
- The gate sags at the latch corner. A worn roller lets the gate drop a half inch or more, and you’ll see the latch strike sitting higher than the latch itself. The hinge pin is usually the first thing to go, especially on gates that have been hanging for ten-plus years.
- You hear grinding or squealing when the gate cycles. A sealed bearing roller that’s lost its seals fills with Florida grit and starts grinding metal on metal. The sound is your warning that the roller body is chewing itself up, which grooves the track or the post plate.
- The operator sounds like it’s working harder than it used to. When the gate drags, the motor draws more current to push through the resistance. You’ll hear a deeper tone or the board may start throwing limit errors. The operator’s not failing, the hinge or roller is loading it down.
- The gate scrapes the ground or the track. Once the roller’s worn down to the hub, the gate’s weight sits on the edge of the frame instead of on the wheel. Look for fresh scrape marks on concrete or a polished stripe on the metal track.
- You can rock the gate by hand with the operator locked. Any movement at the hinge point that isn’t smooth rotation means the pin, bushing, or plate has play in it. That play beats up every other component in the system, including the operator mount.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In Tampa, expect to pay $140 to $220 for a single Viking hinge or roller replacement, and $260 to $380 when we’re doing a full set of four hinges or two roller assemblies on a typical residential swing gate. The spread comes down to how much of the old hardware fights us on the way out, Florida salt air eats the bolt threads on gates near the bay, and occasionally a hinge plate has to be cut off rather than unbolted. We quote the part and labor as one line item, and the written price you approve before we start is the price you pay. Every Viking hinge and roller replacement from Carver Gate Repair Tampa carries our written one-year guarantee, and if the new part fails inside that window, the second visit is free.
DIY or Call Us?
You can diagnose this yourself without touching a wrench. Standing at the hinge side, have someone cycle the gate while you watch the roller and the hinge pin. If you see wobble, hear grinding, or spot a gap between the plate and the post, you’ve found the problem. What you shouldn’t do is unbolt a gate hinge while the gate is still hanging. A residential swing gate is heavy enough to crush a foot or hand if it drops, and once the hinge is loose, the gate’s full weight transfers to whatever’s left holding it. The safe play is to take the gate off its hinges with a second set of hands and proper support, or call us. We bring the right parts and the right lift, and we don’t leave the old hardware in your driveway. If you’d rather not touch it, call (850) 533-8293 and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
FAQs
Most Viking residential hinges and rollers last 8 to 12 years in Tampa before the bearings or hinge pins wear out. Coastal air, especially within a few miles of the bay, cuts that to 6 to 9 years unless the parts are greased seasonally. If you want to know how yours are holding up, call (850) 533-8293 and we’ll take a look.
In most cases, no. Once a sealed bearing lets in water and grit, the roller’s done; and a hinge pin that’s worn into an oval hole can’t be fixed by greasing it. Replacement is the only repair that lasts. That’s why we carry the parts on the truck rather than promising a rebuild.
A single hinge or roller swap usually takes 45 minutes to an hour. A full set of four hinges or two roller assemblies runs about two hours, and that includes re-leveling the gate and checking that the operator’s limit settings still match the travel.
We keep the common Viking G-5, F-1, and R-6 hinge and roller configurations on our service trucks, along with aftermarket equivalents that meet Viking’s specs. If your gate takes an uncommon offset hinge, we’ll order it and schedule the install as soon as it lands. Call (850) 533-8293 and we’ll confirm the part over the phone.
