BFT Gate Motor Replacement: The Tampa Owner’s Guide

We stock and install BFT-compatible gate motor replacements throughout Tampa, with most residential swing and slide operator swaps running $850 to $1,900 installed depending on the model and what’s reusable. If you call before noon on a weekday, we can usually have a technician out the same day to confirm the diagnosis and give you a written price before any work starts. Most Tampa owners discover the failure the same way: the gate worked fine for years, then one morning it hums, grinds, or simply won’t move at all.

BFT builds solid operators, but Tampa’s humidity and salt air take a toll faster than the manufacturer’s lifespan charts suggest. We see it every week in neighborhoods like Westchase, Carrollwood, and New Tampa: capacitor failures, corroded limit switch contacts, and control boards that cook themselves in a Florida afternoon thunderstorm. The good news is BFT parts are available, and a motor replacement usually costs far less than replacing the entire operator.

Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT makes three main residential lines we service in Tampa: the Phobos series (swing gates, available in AC and 24V DC), the Icaro series (light-duty slide gates), and the Deimos series (heavier slide gates up to 1,300 lb). Within each line, the model number printed on the motor’s data plate tells us everything: voltage, gate capacity, and which control board family it uses. If that plate is faded or missing, we can usually identify the operator from the arm configuration and gear housing.

One compatibility gotcha specific to BFT: the Phobos AC and Phobos 24V look nearly identical from the outside but use completely different motors and control boards. Mixing them is a $400-plus mistake we’ve had to undo for more than one Tampa homeowner who bought the wrong part online. On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question: for BFT motors specifically, we recommend OEM or a proven equivalent like a remanufactured motor from a BFT parts distributor. Cheap no-name replacements on Amazon rarely survive two Tampa summers.

Signs Your BFT Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

  • The gate hums but won’t move. This usually means the start capacitor has failed, a common BFT issue after 5 to 7 years in humid climates. The motor is getting power and trying to start, but can’t get the momentum it needs. In some cases it’s a capacitor swap; in others, the motor windings are already compromised. We test both before recommending replacement.
  • The gate stops mid-travel and reverses. This points to the limit switches losing calibration or, more commonly on older BFT units, the motor’s torque sensor misreading resistance. Tampa’s afternoon rainstorms can cause moisture intrusion that makes these problems intermittent, which is why they’re easy to chase and hard to pin down without a meter.
  • You have to press the remote two or three times. The control board relay is sticking or the radio receiver is losing sensitivity. On BFT boards from the mid-2010s, we see swollen capacitors on the receiver circuit that mimic motor problems but are actually board issues. A motor replacement won’t fix this if the board is the culprit, which is why a correct diagnosis matters before any parts get ordered.
  • The motor runs but the gate barely moves. The gearbox or internal shear pin has failed, and the motor shaft is spinning against nothing useful. This is a mechanical failure inside the operator housing, not an electrical one. On BFT Deimos units, the gear is replaceable; on Phobos models, the most cost-effective fix is usually a full motor assembly.
  • The breaker trips the moment the gate activates. Short circuits in the motor windings or the run capacitor are drawing far more current than the circuit can handle. This is the one symptom where we tell Tampa owners to stop testing the gate and shut the breaker off until someone can look at it. A shorted motor is a fire risk if left energized.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Tampa, a BFT gate motor replacement for a swing gate typically lands between $850 and $1,400 installed, while slide gate motors run $1,200 to $1,900. The spread comes down to three things: which BFT model is installed, whether we’re replacing just the motor or the motor plus the control board, and whether the existing arm and mounting hardware can be reused. You’ll get the exact number in writing before we turn a single screw, including parts, labor, and any disposal fee for the old motor.

Every replacement we do is covered by the 365-Day Done Right Promise: if anything fails on the motor or our workmanship within a full year, we come back at no charge. That’s a written guarantee, not a verbal one. We also handle the full bench test after install: torque settings, limit calibration, safety edge response, and a full cycle test so the gate opens and closes like the day it was installed.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. What you can safely do: check that the gate isn’t physically blocked, verify the breaker hasn’t tripped, and confirm the manual release works. Those three checks take five minutes and sometimes reveal the problem isn’t the motor at all. What you shouldn’t do: open the motor housing and start swapping parts. BFT operators run on 120V or 24V with a start capacitor that can hold a charge even after the unit is unplugged, and a wrong connection can fry a $300 control board or injure you. We’ve seen both.

If the motor isn’t turning or the gate won’t hold position, call us at (850) 533-8293. Lonnie Burke runs the diagnostics personally on most BFT calls, and he doesn’t recommend a motor replacement unless the test numbers say it’s necessary. If it’s a capacitor or a limit switch, you’ll get that repair instead and keep the difference in your pocket.
