Get your free estimateElite Access Control Installation: The Tampa Owner’s Guide
Elite access control installation in Tampa typically runs $450 to $1,200 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing a keypad, card reader, or the full control board and power supply. We stock Elite-compatible parts on our trucks and can usually complete the swap same-day once we’re on site. Most owners discover the failure the hard way: the keypad goes dead, the card reader stops recognizing credentials, or the gate opens fine one morning and won’t respond by evening.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Elite. What that means for you is we match the part to your existing Elite system without pushing a full retrofit when a component swap gets the gate working again. Lonnie Burke has run our Tampa crew through enough Elite boards and keypads in Westchase, Carrollwood, and South Tampa to know which parts fail first and which replacements actually hold up in Florida humidity.
Which Elite Models This Applies To
Elite access control installation covers several component lines, and the right part depends on what’s already wired into your operator. The most common systems we work on in Tampa are the Elite SL-3000 slide gate operators and the Elite Swing series, each paired with either a Mirage keypad, a proximity card reader, or a telephone entry intercom.
Before you order anything, check the label on your existing keypad or reader. Elite stamps the model number on the back plate or inside the housing, and that number matters. A Mirage 100 keypad is not a straight swap for a Mirage 200, even though they look nearly identical at a glance. The wiring pinouts differ, and guessing gets you a dead keypad and a service call anyway.
OEM Elite parts carry the exact firmware and connector layout your operator expects. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but in our experience they’re hit or miss on the older SL-3000 boards. We’ll quote both when it makes sense, and we’ll always tell you which one we’d put on our own gate.

Signs Your Elite Access Control Installation Is Failing
- Keypad accepts the code but never triggers the gate. This usually points to a failing relay on the main control board or a break in the low-voltage wiring between the keypad and the operator. The keypad thinks it sent the signal; the board never received it.
- Card reader beeps but won’t recognize programmed credentials. Readers lose their programming when the internal memory battery dies, or when a power surge cooks the onboard chip. In Tampa, we see a spike in this after summer lightning storms roll through.
- Intermittent operation, worse after rain. Moisture intrusion inside the keypad housing or card reader seal is the usual culprit. The Florida humidity cycle (hot, wet, hot, wet) breaks down gaskets faster than the manufacturer’s lifespan estimates suggest.
- The display is frozen, scrambled, or blank. On telephone entry systems, a blank screen usually means the power supply is sagging or the board itself has failed. Swapping the keypad alone won’t fix it if the power supply is the problem.
- The gate works from the manual button but not from any access control device. That isolates the failure to the access control wiring or the component itself, not the gate motor. This is a good sign: it means your operator is likely fine and the fix is limited to the access hardware.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Here’s what Elite access control installation actually costs in Tampa, based on the jobs we run week to week:
- Keypad replacement (Mirage series or equivalent): $450 to $650 installed
- Proximity card reader replacement: $500 to $750 installed
- Control board replacement: $650 to $1,000 installed
- Full access control retrofit (keypad, reader, power supply, wiring): $900 to $1,200+ installed
The range comes down to two things: which Elite component failed and whether the low-voltage wiring from the device to the operator is still sound. We write the price before any work starts, parts and labor together, so the number doesn’t move once we open the housing. Every access control installation carries our written guarantee, good for a full year from the date of service. If the replacement fails inside that window, we return and repair it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Low-voltage access control wiring won’t hurt you, but it will frustrate you. You can safely check a few things yourself: confirm the breaker for the gate is on, verify the keypad has power if it has a backlight, and check whether the same issue happens with a second keypad or remote. If the gate opens fine from the manual button inside the operator but not from the keypad or reader, the problem is in the access control component or its wiring.
Where DIY goes wrong is inside the operator cabinet. The capacitor in an Elite operator holds a charge even with the power off, and shorting the wrong terminals can take out a $400 control board in half a second. We’ve been called out to fix more than one “I watched a YouTube video” job where the owner turned a $500 keypad swap into a $1,100 board replacement. If you’re not certain, call (850) 533-8293 and let us diagnose it before you touch a wire.
FAQs
Expect five to eight years from an Elite keypad or card reader in Tampa, less if it’s mounted on an unshaded west-facing wall. Direct sun and the wet-dry humidity cycle harden gaskets and fade the membrane buttons faster than the listed service life suggests.
Sometimes. A keypad with one dead button or a reader with a corroded connector can often be cleaned and resealed in place. A board with fried relays or a reader with a dead chip means replacement. We’ll tell you which one you have and why before quoting anything.
Keypad and reader replacements are typically done in under an hour. Control board replacements run one to two hours, depending on how much rewiring is needed. We work by appointment in Tampa, and most jobs are scheduled the same week you call.
Yes. We carry Elite-compatible keypads, readers, power supplies, and control boards on our trucks, along with parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems. If we don’t have the exact Elite model on the truck the day we arrive, we order it and return within a few days.
If your Elite access control has failed or is acting up, call (850) 533-8293. We’ll answer in person, schedule a time that works, and give you a written price before any work begins.
